What is Tooth Whitening

Tooth whitening is a process that uses a special formula to return your teeth to their natural bright white shade. There are a variety of reasons that teeth can become stained or discolored. This includes:

There are a variety of tooth whitening products on the market today. There are tooth whitening toothpaste, gels, strips, trays, and even brush-on applications. While many of these approaches can clear up some of the discolorations that you have, nothing can clean like a professional treatment.

Part of this reasoning lies in the fact that these over the counter products cannot sell formulas that are as concentrated as we can offer in the office. Even if you could get this same strength over the counter, you would run the risk of damaging your teeth or gums if they weren’t used properly.

For the best whitening solutions, our professional teeth whitening will yield the best results for you. An in-office treatment has been shown to give patients the safest and most effective results.

In-Office Treatments

When you come in for a whitening treatment, Marietta Smile Gallery staff will make sure that the entire process is thorough and that everything is properly explained to you. It is important that our patients are informed about their treatment.

Upon arrival, our staff will make sure to document the current shade of your teeth. This helps you recognize just how much change has happened with our whitening treatments. The teeth are then polished with a grainy material to remove any plaque or buildup from the surface of your teeth. If there are particles that are left on your teeth, they can block the whitening from reaching and whitening the actual tooth.

Your mouth will then be prepared for the whitening treatment. Gauze is placed around your gums to keep your teeth dry, and a retractor is placed to ensure that your lips, cheeks, and tongue don’t come in contact with the whitener. A barrier is then placed along the gum line to ensure that the gum tissue doesn’t come in contact with the whitener.

The whitener is then placed onto the teeth. There are two basic types of whitener that are used. One contains hydrogen peroxide as the base, and the other uses carbamide peroxide. The whitener is left on the teeth between 30 and 60 minutes. Some products also utilize a special light that helps to activate the peroxide. Once the maximum time has been reached, or the desired shade of white, the product is cleaned off of the teeth, and a fluoride rinse is provided to help reduce tooth sensitivity. If the first visit did not reach the desired shade, a follow-up appointment will be made until you get the bright white smile that you want.

Once you have completed the whitening treatment, you should avoid foods, drinks, or tobacco products for 24 hours that could stain your teeth. This includes coffees, teas, grapes, mustard, tomato juice, beets, or a variety of other foods. However, after 24 hours, you can resume a normal diet.
